­­­­Course Aims:

This course provides an introduction to Access, enabling delegates to construct an effective database and work with data in tables. Furthermore, it provides an introduction to using queries to interrogate table data and viewing and printing information using forms and reports.

Course Pre-requisites:

This course is open to anyone seeking a basic but effective understanding of Access. Students who wish to attend this course need to have good, general knowledge of using Office 2007 applications in a Windows environment, e.g. opening/saving files, using the Ribbon, navigating documents and setting options in dialog boxes.

Course Objectives:

On completion of this course delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the principals involved in designing an Access database;
  • Be able to create data tables; and
  • Know how to manage, interrogate and print data using database objects.

Introduction and Objectives

Creating Database Tables

  • Concepts of database table design
  • Using Table Design View
  • Setting field types
  • Setting basic field properties (field size, caption and format)


Editing and Organising Data in Tables

  • Adding and editing records
  • Sorting and filtering data
  • Finding/replacing data


Introduction to Queries

  • Creating queries using Design View
  • Sorting, re-arranging and hiding fields in a query
  • Joining tables in a query
  • Adding criteria to a query


Creating Basic Forms

  • Creating a form in Layout View
  • Editing a form design in Layout View
  • Working with data in a form
  • Creating a form using the Form Wizard


Creating Basic Reports

  • Creating a report in Layout View
  • Editing a report design in Layout View
  • Creating a report using the Report Wizard
