Immunisation Update for Healthcare Support Workers

This update meets the recommendations of Public Health England and Public Health Wales National Minimum Standards and Core Curriculum for Immunisation Training of Healthcare Support Workers (2015).

Participants should have previously attended our 2 day Injection Technique and Immunisation Training for HCA's course.

As recommended by the PHE/PHW, the update is designed for HCSWs (including healthcare assistants, assistant practitioners, clinical assistants and other similar titles) who have been delegated a role in immunisation by an appropriate registered healthcare professional.

COURSE CONTENT
  • Current issues in vaccinations that are pertinent for HCSWs
  • Recent epidemiology of relevant vaccine preventable diseases
  • Any changes to the recommendations or national policy for relevant immunisations
  • Any changes to legislation relevant to vaccination
  • Review of current practice and identification of areas for improvement
  • Review of injection practice including intramuscular, subcutaneous and intranasal routes of administration R
  • eview of support strategies
  • Q&A session for commonly encountered problems in practice
  • Review the requirement for providing accurate and up-to-date information about the relevant diseases and vaccines to patients
  • Consideration of the requirement to consult a registered healthcare professional when further information or action is required for the patients needs
  • Review the requirements for safe and effective practice
  • Consider how high standards of care are delivered and maintained
  • Consider the requirement for reassessment of competency in administration of vaccines
  • Review recognition and management of anaphylaxis, appropriate management of adverse reactions and the requirement to undertake mandatory training in basic life support
  • Consider the HCSW role and limitations in immunisation and injections

Vaccines that are commonly administered by HCSWs:

  • Inactivated injectable pneumococcal vaccine for adults
  • Inactivated injectable influenza vaccine for adults
  • Live intranasal influenza vaccine for children aged 2-17 years
  • Live injectable shingles vaccine for adults aged 70 and over according to current policy
AIMS / OUTCOMES
  • Review the requirement for providing accurate and up-to-date information about the relevant diseases and vaccines to patients
  • Consider the requirement to consult a registered healthcare professional when further information is required for the patients needs
  • Review the requirements for safe and effective practice
