Safeguarding children is everyone’s business but certain professional groups (including police, teachers and healthcare staff) have statutory responsibilities with regards to safeguarding children and child protection. This safeguarding children course includes safeguarding children at level 2 and level 3 and is suitable for workers who work with children or parents/ carers on regular basis.

***NOTE: Safeguarding Children level 1 is a prerequisite for level 2 and 3, therefore this level 2 & 3 bundle should only be purchased if you have you have previously completed level 1. Safeguarding Children 2 & 3 eLearning Overview:

The safeguarding children level 2 eLearning course provides staff with a more detailed understanding of the issues associated with safeguarding children and child protection.

The safeguarding children level 3 eLearning course provides staff with an understanding of assessment, evaluations and interventions relating to safeguarding & child protection concerns.

What will learners get out of it?

Safeguarding Children level 2 will allow you to:

  • Examine how risk factors, including parent’s mental and physical well-being, make children vulnerable to abuse and maltreatment
  • Explain ‘thresholds’ including how and when need or risk escalates
  • Describe the impact and importance of early help in the prevention of child maltreatment
  • Describe the different ways they can be an effective advocate for children including facilitating disclosure and providing a positive experience during disclosure
  • Identify when and how to refer a child including those suspected of being a victim of trafficking or sexual exploitation, at risk of FGM, having been a victim of FGM or those at risk of being radicalised
  • Explain the steps they should take to make a safeguarding or child protection referral and identify their responsibilities once a referral has been made
  • Document safeguarding and child protection concerns in an appropriate and accurate manner
  • Describe the different ways multi-agency teams work together to safeguard children and young people
  • Explain the importance of sharing information with colleagues, multi-agency teams and identify their responsibilities in this regard
  • Act in accordance with key statutory and non-statutory guidance and legislation including the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child, and the Human Rights Act

Safeguarding Children level 3 will allow you to:

  • Use a child and family-focussed approach to identify the possible signs of child maltreatment
  • Explain the importance of identifying risk factors in the lives of the parents early so that appropriate support and interventions can be put in place as soon as possible
  • Describe the forensic procedures used to investigate incidences of suspected child maltreatment and identify their responsibilities in this regard
  • Explain how findings from forensic examinations must be presented in order to meet clinical and legal requirements
  • Discuss the principles of good assessments and how these can be put into practice
  • Describe the importance of good communication with children and young people including helping them to participate in decisions
  • Explain how to contribute to and make considered judgements about safeguarding and child protection concerns including their responsibility to challenge decisions, escalate concerns, and set clear timescales and consequences for parents/carers
  • Describe the issues surrounding misdiagnosis and how to effectively manage diagnostic uncertainty and risk
  • Describe their role in contributing to multi-agency assessments and sharing of information
  • Explain the importance of analysis of the information available and to help build a picture of what life is like for a child
  • Describe the role of effective supervision, peer review and the potential impact of safeguarding and child protection work on professionals

Who is this course for?

Safeguarding children level 2 is for staff who work with children and young people, families, or parents/carers on a regular basis

Safeguarding children level 3 is for those staff who work directly with children and who will be expected to contribute to the assessment, planning, intervening and evaluating the need of a child as well as aspects such as parenting capacity, family and environmental factors.


The session is followed by a multiple choice assessment designed to test learners' understanding of the course. Learning progress and test results can be tracked by managers for internal development and learners can keep a certificate of completion for CPD.


This course was designed with safeguarding specialists in the health sector. This course meets the outcomes for level 2 and 3 of the Core Skills framework dependent on your degree of contact with young people and/ or carers.
