The Learning Disabilities Awareness course helps health & care practitioners understand the issues surrounding learning disabilities including the relationship between learning disabilities and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with the purpose of helping learners reflect on and improve how they care for people with learning disabilities.

Overview

By the end of the session, learners will be able to:

  • Differentiate between ‘learning disability’ and ‘learning difficulty’
  • Discuss how learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder overlap
  • Describe some of the things people with learning disabilities may find difficult and why
  • Describe some of the ways in which health and social care staff can support people who have learning disabilities
  • Describe what can go wrong in the care of people with learning disabilities
  • Reflect on how attitudes towards impairments and disabilities, and including people in their own care are essential for promoting well-being for the individual
  • Discuss what 'reasonable adjustment' means and how to adjust the way that care is delivered to people with learning disabilities
  • Explain how early detection of learning disabilities can improve how care is provided and support is given
  • Explain the legislation and policies that are designed to promote and protect human rights including the concepts of capacity and consent
  • Discuss the importance of reporting concerns and identify how concerns can be reported according to local policy and guidelines
Who is this course for?

The Learning Disabilities Awareness course has been designed to provide staff and volunteers, both clinical and non-clinical, with an introduction to learning disabilities.

Assessment

Learning progress and test results can be tracked by managers for internal development and learners can keep a certificate of completion for CPD.

Accreditations:

The course is designed to meet the requirements of the 'Awareness of Mental Health, Dementia & Learning Disabilities' standard within the Care Certificate.
