Appropriate for: All clinical staff that may be required to perform basic life support using an automated external defibrillator.

CQC Fundamental Standards: Regulation 12: Safe care and treatment, Regulation 15: Premises and equipment

Aims:

To recognise and be able to provide basic life support and automated external defibrillation to a casualty collapsed with a cardiac arrest.

Learning outcomes:

At the end of this training session the candidate must be able to:

  • Recognise a patient in cardiac arrest
  • Demonstrate effective basic life support skills
  • Safely attach and operate an automated external defibrillator
  • Identify and discuss the safety issues surrounding defibrillation
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of the importance of routine maintenance of equipment and record keeping
  • Understand the importance of recording and reporting any cardiac
  • Be able to give a definition of anaphylaxis and demonstrate correct management of a casualty suffering from anaphylaxis
