This cardiovascular disease training course uses our proven and popular combination of self study and face to face workshops. Six months of self-directed study facilitated by a distance learning pack concludes with two days of compulsory workshops. Attendance at a mid-course study day is optional.

Outline Content

This six month multi-professional cardiovascular disease course is aimed primarily at health care professionals (doctors, nurses, dietitians, physiotherapists and pharmacists) who have a role in the delivery and management of care for patients and their families experiencing and at risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) / coronary heart disease (CHD). It is aimed at those who wish to respond more effectively to the healthcare needs of their patients. On completion of the module the student will be able to suggest, initiate and vary lifestyle modification and drug therapy to individual needs. The content covers risk assessment and management including hypertension, dyslipidaemia and the management of existing cardiovascular diseases. Emphasis is placed upon the health needs of the individual, health promotion, self-empowerment and palliation.

This course is available as accredited by Teesside University or CPD Certified. On the accredited course, you will need to write a case study as part of your assessment.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the epidemiology and patho-physiology of cardiovascular disease
  • Critically analyse the principles underpinning approaches to assessment and management of the person at risk of or with established cardiovascular disease
  • Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the management and care of a person and their families at risk or with established cardiovascular disease
  • Analyse, apply and interpret evidence from a range of sources to underpin the care and management of those at risk or with established cardiovascular disease
  • Demonstrate intellectual flexibility in the application of relevant theory to the management of cardiovascular risk and existing disease
  • Recognise and identify those at risk of cardiovascular disease
  • Review and modify care delivery in response to the assessment of the person with existing cardiovascular disease or at risk of the condition
  • Develop care strategies in response to cardiovascular disease
  • Develop a detailed understanding of a multi-professional approach to care delivery and evaluate own role within the team
  • Demonstrate effective writing skills appropriate to level 5.

Assessment

One hour unseen examination comprising of True/False statements based on the content of the module. The accredited course will require the completion of a 4000 word case study.
