Course Delivery & Duration

The module begins with a mandatory one-day workshop followed by 16 weeks of self-managed, directed study.

This course is available as accredited by Teesside University or as a standalone course. On the accredited course, you will be required to submit a 2,000-word case study focusing on the NHS Health Check of a person eligible for the programme.

Outline Content

This one day study session offers practical guidance to health care practitioners, ( health care assistants, practitioners, pharmacists, nurses and private providers), who will be involved in the delivery of the NHS Health Check to the eligible population. A variety of teaching methods are used during the workshop, including experiential learning, lecture and interactive group work. The course aims to further develop practitioner’s knowledge and skills in the use of the NHS Health Check programme to facilitate the cardiovascular assessment of the eligible population.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the key principles of the NHS Health Check programme, with specific reference to eligible groups, communicating risk and lifestyle interventions.
  • Explain the requirements of the risk assessment programme.
  • Identify the principles of risk engines i.e. QRISK2, Framingham.
  • Identify the disease filters linked to assessment (chronic kidney disease, hypertension, diabetes).
  • Gather, record and input the data to calculate a cardiovascular risk score for the individual's NHS Health Check.
  • Recognise and identify those at risk of diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease and stroke.
  • Identify additional risk factors that impact on an individual.
  • Describe lifestyle interventions appropriate to the individual needs of the patient.
  • Recognise the individual healthcare needs of patients and signpost to the appropriate agency.
  • Demonstrate writing skills appropriate to the level of study.

Assessment

On the accredited course, the summative assessment is a 2,000-word case study focusing on the NHS Health Check of a person eligible for the programme.

Dates available on arrangement

Primary Care Training Centre can also create this course for you on arrangement either at your workplace or at one of their locations.

If there are sufficient students (usually 20-24 students), our tutors can come to you at a big saving in time as well as travel and accommodation costs for the students. We call these courses/study days delivered in your area Satellites.
