Ear Irrigation

Aims

This ear irrigation training is aimed at registered nurses and health care assistant providing ear care to service users. The course will teach basic ear care, how to irrigate the ear confidently and safely. Delegates on this course are required to receive supervision from an appropriate mentor to support their learning and practical application in the workplace.


Ear Irrigation Training Course Summary:

  • Anatomy and physiology
  • How to examine the ear (Otoscopy)
  • Common ear problems & foreign bodies (ear wax, cholesteatoma, perforations, tinnitus)
  • Complications
  • Risk assessing and Contraindications
  • Infection control
  • Legal, Professional and Ethical issues, including, accountability, consent, documentation and record keeping
  • Ear irrigation Procedure (syringing)
  • The role of ear drops
  • Practical session


Guardian Angels Training will provide the necessary competency proformas required to ensure safe and evidenced-based clinical practice following completion of our training courses. This will then allow the Registered Provider to ensure mandatory competency assessments are completed within the workplace by a nominated mentor/supervisor.


Learning Outcomes

After this training course delegates will be able to:

  1. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the ear
  2. Outline common ear problems
  3. Describe their role in prevention and management of common ear problems
  4. List the benefits, risks and complications of ear care
  5. Discuss relevant legal, professional and ethical issues
  6. Practice ear care in simulation including ear irrigation


Duration

This course lasts approximately 3 - 6 hours.


Certification

Delegates will be issued with certificates of compliance valid for a period of 2 year. Nurses can evidence the number of hours of participatory learning for their NMC Revalidation.

This training course is only available to employers (NHS Trusts, CCG's, Care Providers, Independent Hospitals) that are able to provide onsite training facilities for groups of 4 - 12 delegates per training session.
