Guardian Angels offers the ONLY nationally regulated qualification Epilepsy and the Administration of Buccal Midazolam. Entitled the Level 3 Award in Epilepsy and the Administration of Buccal Midazolam, this *Ofqual regulated* qualification provides additional quality assurance that other training providers cannot provide.

This Epilepsy, Seizure management (First Aid) and Rescue Medication (typically Buccal Midazolam) training course offers an understanding of epilepsy, along with how to respond to a seizure and the administration of Buccal Midazolam (other rescue medications are available and can be included if required).

While Buccal Midazolam is the most frequently prescribed rescue medication for prolonged or cluster epilepsy seizures - our fully trained and qualified nurse instructors can also deliver bespoke seizure management and rescue medication administration should your requirements include the prescription and use of:

  • Rectal Diazepam
  • Rectal Paraldehyde

Whenever faced with someone suffering from an epilepsy seizure, fast action and correct administration of rescue medication (if prescribed) is essential. In order to treat the casualty effectively. What does our Buccal Midazolam training and seizure management course cover?

Carefully developed in compliance with ESNA Guidelines and Standards for Rescue Medication, our epilepsy training course covers everything you need to know. From assessing the situation, to how to understand and administer rescue medication. Our course content including:

Epilepsy:

  • The definition of epilepsy
  • The causes of epilepsy
  • The epilepsy diagnosis including differential diagnosis
  • Seizure types
  • The management of epilepsy (treatment)
  • Seizure first aid
  • What is the definition of prolonged and repeated seizures, and Status Epilepticus?
  • Risk assessment, Care planning and recording mechanisms
  • SUDEP prevention
  • Interactive case discussions
  • Sources of support and information

Rescue medication (Buccal Midazolam or Rectal Diazepam or Rectal Paraldehyde)

  • What is midazolam (or diazepam or paraldehyde), including different preparations / concentrations
  • Indications for the use of rescue medication
  • Appropriate doses
  • Benefits of using buccal midazolam (or diazepam or paraldehyde)
  • Recognise signs of respiratory depression
  • Possible difficulties in administration (e.g. excessive salivation, injury to mouth etc)
  • Potential side effects
  • Actions if rescue medication is ineffective
  • Identifying and using individual’s protocol / care plan
  • Secure storage and safe disposal
  • Duty of care/ responsibility and accountability
  • Practical demonstration using DVD, visual aids and use of "demo medication" to demonstrate on a volunteer / manikin

Course duration

6 hours


Assessment and certification

The course process consists of continual assessment by the course tutor, case studies, practical scenarios, OSCE's and workbook completion. Guardian Angels Training will provide the necessary competency proformas required to ensure safe and evidenced-based clinical practice following completion of our training course, allowing the registered provider to ensure mandatory competency assessments are completed within the workplace by a nominated mentor/supervisor. Upon successful completion of the course, delegates will receive a certificate valid for 2 years and The Level 3 Award in Epilepsy and the Administration of Buccal Midazolam) RQF *Ofqual regulated* qualification.
