Tracheostomy Care Training

Our tracheostomy care training has been designed to provide nurses and support workers with the information, understanding and skills to ensure that patient safety is expertly managed and that the risk of potential problems associated with tracheostomies are mitigated. Our tracheostomy care training is designed for nurses and support workers. To give them the understanding and skills to ensure that patient safety is expertly managed. As well the risk of potential problems associated with tracheostomies are mitigated. A temporary or permanent clinical measure, a tracheostomy is used in several situations, such as:


  • A compromised airway
  • For respiratory support such as mechanical ventilation
  • A requirement for respiratory secretion clearance support


A high level of tracheostomy care is essential in order to keep the tubes and dressings hygienic, but there are also issues with communication that need to be understood and addressed. Delivered by qualified and experienced nurses and paramedics, our tracheostomy care training will prepare delegates for ongoing workplace competency assessments.


What’s covered in our tracheostomy care course?

Tracheostomy care is a crucial clinical skill in order to facilitate patient and service user outcome and wellbeing. Our evidenced based staff development programmes are both informative and practical, ensuring patients, staff and the care providers all benefit from the knowledge and implementation of best practice. Our course syllabus covers:


  • Evidenced based tracheostomy care guidelines
  • Current evidence based practice and research
  • Types of tracheostomy tubes
  • The importance of effective communication to alleviate panic and distress
  • Clinical tracheostomy care and practice risk assessment
  • Nursing and tracheostomy care considerations
  • Removal of tracheostomy tube
  • Tracheostomy care including: Changing dressings, suctioning, inner tube cleaning and replacement etc. (bespoke to your local needs)
  • Tracheostomy resuscitation
  • Tracheostomy humidification
  • Managing tracheostomy care emergencies


Duration

4-6 hours, at a time and location suited for you.


Assessment and certification

The course process consists of continual assessment by the course tutor, case studies, practical scenarios, OSCE's and workbook completion. Guardian Angels Training will provide the necessary competency proformas required to ensure safe and evidenced-based clinical practice following completion of our training course, allowing the registered provider to ensure mandatory competency assessments are completed within the workplace by a nominated mentor/supervisor. Upon successful completion of the course, delegates will receive a certificate valid for 2 years.
