Level 2 Accredited Dementia Awareness Training

Dementia should be viewed as a disability because people with dementia are not aware of requirements for living.

They can forget to do basic things like eating food or drinking.

Considering these facts that they can not act in the manner of a responsible adult makes them disabled.

The Social Model definition of disability: ‘the loss or limitation of opportunities to take part in the community on an equal level with others because of physical and social barriers’ and refers to being disabled as having an impairment defined as ‘the loss or limitation of physical, mental or sensory function on a long-term or permanent basis’.

•By the end of the Session, participants will be able to:
–Define “dementia”.
–Discuss two changes in memory that occur as a normal part of aging.
–List at least two symptoms of early dementia.
–List two irreversible causes of dementia and two reversible causes.
–Describe Behavioural symptoms that are typically seen as dementia progresses (the five ”A”s of dementia).
–Identify and discuss the characteristics of two types of dementia.
