Phlebotomy Training (inc venepuncture)

Aims

This course will teach students the knowledge of how to safely take blood. The anatomy of veins and arteriesd will also be covered. The aim of this course is to improve students knowledge of anatomy, identify suitable veins and demonstrate taking bloods using a synthetic arm.

Course Content

This course will cover:

  • Definitions of venepuncture
  • Roles and responsibilities
  • Consent and accountability
  • Practical labelling of veins
  • Suitable sites
  • Sites to be avoided
  • Identifying when not to take blood
  • Tourniquet and needle usage
  • Disposal of needles
  • Importance of labelling
  • Complications and escalation

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course each candidate will be able to
  • Demonstrate the knowledge of venepuncture- Demonstrate the procedure
  • Identify issues- Demonstrate how to handle and label samples
  • Demonstrate how to take bloods using an anatomical model
  • Compentency will take place in the delegates workplace
