Food hygiene refers to the conditions and measures necessary to ensure the safety of food from production to consumption. Food can become contaminated at any point during slaughtering or harvesting, processing, storage, distribution, transportation and preparation.
Food safety is a scientific discipline describing handling, preparation, and storage of food in ways that prevent foodborne illness. This includes several routines that should be followed to avoid potential health hazards.
Course content
This online Care Certificate Standard 8 (Fluids, Nutrition and Food Safety) training course covers the following:
- Understand the principles of hydration, nutrition and food safety;
- Describe the importance of food safety, including hygiene, in the preparation and handling of food,
- Explain the importance of proper nutrition and hydration in maintaining health and wellbeing,
- List signs and symptoms of poor nutrition and hydration, and
- Explain how to promote adequate nutrition and hydration.
- Support individuals to have access to fluids following their plan of care;
- Ensure drinks are within reach of those that have restrictions on their movement/mobility,
- Ensure that drinks are refreshed regularly,
- Ensure that individuals are offered drinks under their plan of care,
- Support and encourage individuals to drink per their plan of care, and
- Know how to report any concerns to the relevant person. This could include:
- A senior member of staff,
- Carer, and
- Family member.
- Support individuals to have access to food and nutrition following their plan of care;
- Ensure any nutritional products are within reach of those that have restrictions on their movement/mobility,
- Ensure food is provided at the appropriate temperature and following the plan of care, i.e. the individual can eat it,
- Ensure that proper utensils are available to enable the individual to meet their nutritional needs as independently as possible,
- Support and encourage individuals to eat following their plan of care,
- Know how to report any concerns to the relevant person. This could include:
- A senior member of staff,
- Carer, and
- Family member.
