Autism Awareness

This one day Autism Awareness course is aimed at a range of front line staff (including care workers, GP, hospital receptionists and volunteers) who in their role would benefit from a basic awareness of autism and from gaining knowledge to support people with autism and their families. The key outcome for individuals undertaking this training is that they will feel more confident when working with people with autism and their families.

Course Outcomes:

  • Be familiar with the underpinning values and attitudes needed to enable workers to provide people with autism with a service which values their rights.

Gain basic knowledge regarding autism including:

  • The notion of autism as a spectrum, including the fact that it is a life-long condition.
  • The theoretical models developed by Kanner and Asperger in identifying autism.
  • The key characteristics of autism and the main differences found in people with autism.
  • Common sensory differences experienced by people who have Autism and common co-occurring conditions.
  • The complexity surrounding diagnosis.
  • The prevalence of Autism in the general population.
  • Be able to support the development of social interaction skills and to provide support with transitions and significant life events.

This programme is delivered face to face in a fun and relaxed group over a 1 day period. You will learn through a range of interactive and participative activities and from practical application of the subject matter- including personal accounts from people with autism and their families.

There is no formal assessment for this course. Participants will have an opportunity to test their learning and understanding throughout the course.
