This introductory skills-based course will teach participants to understand the unique ways that dementia affects people. Made up of four different modules, participants will learn how to apply evidence-based practical tools to build positive relationships and confidently support people with Dementia to live well. Delegates will also develop a deeper empathy, understanding and gain skills they need to be bale to build positive relationships with people with Dementia.

This course is aimed at anyone living or working with people who have Dementia and would like a better understanding of the condition as well as how to support people with Dementia.

Course Outcomes:

  • Understand that Dementia affects people in different ways,
  • Recognise the ways physical damage to the brain, caused by dementia may create everyday functional difficulties.
  • Describe how our memory works.
  • Appreciate how our past can shape our future.
  • Understand how difficulties with perception can have an impact on peoples well-being and responsive behaviours.
  • Understand how our senses can be affected by dementia and how this can alter our experiences.
  • Appreciate ways of connecting with a person living with dementia.
  • Recognise how our own actions affect the way a person connects with us.
  • Understand how methods of communication can be affected by Dementia.
