This full-day practical workshop in medicines administration is used by 14 local authorities across the UK. It is specific for care providers who use their own design of medicines chart and mixed monitored dosage system (MDS) blister packs as well as original packs (for example home care, supported living, reablement etc.).

It covers the requirements set out by:

  • The Care Certificate
  • NICE guidelines
  • The Care Quality Commission

This course is accredited by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, and delivered by an experienced pharmacist or nurse. It is the workshop that has been shown to reduce medication errors by 36%.

Learners have their competence assessed to select and record medicines administered using three simulated medicines rounds (before, during and after the workshop). Any who fail are referred to take our Virtual Medicines Round online competence assessment.

Each learner is provided with a full colour 128-page workbook covering the learning outcomes in Unit 3047 "Support the Use of Medication in Social Care Settings" click here to see sample pages. This workbook comes with an e-learning module that can be sat after the workshop. We also have a smaller 32-page version of this workbook for organisations will more limited budgets.

Morning content:

  • Using "my medication administration profiles" to give medicines in a person-centred way
  • Administration from when required protocols (in line with requirements from NICE)
  • The timing of medicines
  • Completion of medicines charts for:
  • Doses taken on time
  • Variable doses
  • Declined doses
  • Completion of medicines charts for mixed MDS (blister packs)
  • Checking for mistakes in mixed MDS (blister packs)
  • Administering from mixed MDS (blister packs)
  • Administering from original packs
  • Simulated medicines round (pre-learning)
  • Administering medicines from original packs and single MDS
  • How to check once opened dates and expiry dates
  • How to check cautionary and advisory labels
  • How to give and record medicines in a systematic way
  • Simulated medicine round assessments (post learning)

Afternoon content:

  • Which medicines/routes require gloves to be worn
  • Administering oral liquids
  • Measuring accurately with oral syringes
  • How to administer with oral syringes
  • Applying creams, ointments and barrier creams
  • Administering inhalers with spacer devices
  • Administering eye drops
