Chronic and Acute Care Management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

To apply you must be a registered practitioner working with people with COPD in the community and in hospital.

This course is offered at Level 3 (Degree) and Masters level and is delivered at our Glenside Campus.

Course content includes:
  • Introduction to COPD:
    • Introduction and pathophysiology of the respiratory system
    • Psychological and sociological support for service users, carers and their families
    • Factors that influence disease progression for example risk factors i.e. smoking, chest Infections, pollution etc
    • Economic, social and political.
  • Assessment; Diagnosis and monitoring:
    • *Introduction to spirometry and lung function testing*
    • *Physical examination and history taking*
    • Telehealth
    • Multi-professional roles in assessment; diagnosis and monitoring.

*The Introduction to Spirometry lung function testing, Physical Examination and History Taking sessions are brief overviews of these processes and do not provide accredited skills or assure competency in practice on completion of this module. If you would like to do an accredited course regarding spirometry, please consider one of the following courses through the Association for Respiratory Technology and Physiology. For the physical examination and history taking course, UWE runs a Physical Assessment and Clinical Reasoning module.

  • Management of COPD:
    • Smoking cessation
    • Inhaled therapy
    • Oral therapy
    • Oxygen therapy
    • Pulmonary rehabilitation
    • Other therapeutic interventions.
  • Management of exacerbations of COPD in primary & secondary care:
    • Self-management; personalised care planning
    • Integrated care pathways
    • Non Invasive Ventilation (NIV)
    • Investigations and treatment
    • End of life care
    • Care transition.

Delivery:

Study time includes 48 contact hours.

Please note: Priority will be given to applications received through our funded educational contracts. Places on this module will be limited for applications received outside of this funding. Please check with your employer as a funded contract place may still be available to support your learning.
