Fundamental Principles of Dementia Care

This course is offered at Level 3 (Degree) and is delivered at our Glenside Campus.

Course content includes:

• Dementia: Types and diagnosis
• Pathophysiology of dementia
• Development of theories related to person centred care
• The importance of identity and life history
• Dementia Friends session (optional)
• Communication memory and language, strategies and cultural diversity
• Working with unmet needs
• The inter relationship of physical and mental health in people with dementia
• Pharmacological approaches when working with people with dementia
• Prevention and keeping well/enhancing the healing environment (student led)
• The Care Act and the Social and political context of dementia care
• Decision making and assessing ; best interest assessments in practice
• Risk enablement in dementia care/SCIE TV online learning (managing risk minimising restraint; decision making processes) directed study
• Ethical decision making with people with dementia
• Working with families and carers.

Delivery:

You will typically attend 6 days (each day 6 hours) over the course of the module. These days will comprise a mixed model of lecture and seminar formats.

Please note: Priority will be given to applications received through our funded educational contracts. Places on this module will be limited for applications received outside of this funding. Please check with your employer as a funded contract place may still be available to support your learning.
