Examination of the Newborn

This course prepares midwives or other health professionals to undertake the Newborn and Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) to the standards set by the National Screening Committee for the newborn and infant at six to eight weeks of age. It also contributes to developing knowledge and skills in the holistic assessment of the newborn and explores how health professionals can use the opportunity provided by the examination to enhance health education and public health. To apply you must have support and be working in a suitable practice area.

This course is offered at Level 3 (Degree) and Masters level and is delivered at our Glenside Campus.

Course content includes:

  • Preparation for the examination of the newborn:
    • History taking and risk factors, preparation of the environment
    • NIPE Standards
    • Holistic examination and assessment of the apparently normal term newborn and the recognition of abnormality, with a focus on the following:: eyes, heart, hips and testes
      • Use and care of equipment for examination purposes.
    • Communication skills:
      • Multidisciplinary teamwork, referral pathways. communication skills.
    • Health Education:
      • Teaching and support of parents; health education.
    • Ethical-legal issues:
      • Accountability and responsibility; applied research studies.

    Delivery:

    Study time is 48 hours and includes lectures, seminars, tutorials, demonstrations, practical classes and workshops, work based learning and supervised time in clinical skills rooms. Contact time will also include the use of virtual learning environments (VLEs), multiple learning methods, online and other Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) activities. You will undertake neonatal examinations in practice.

    Please note: Priority will be given to applications received through our funded educational contracts. Places on this module will be limited for applications received outside of this funding. Please check with your employer as a funded contract place may still be available to support your learning.
