This course prepares midwives or other health professionals to undertake the Newborn and Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) to the standards set by the National Screening Committee for the newborn and infant at six to eight weeks of age. It also contributes to developing knowledge and skills in the holistic assessment of the newborn and explores how health professionals can use the opportunity provided by the examination to enhance health education and public health. To apply you must have support and be working in a suitable practice area.

Study time is 48 hours and includes lectures, seminars, tutorials, demonstrations, practical classes and workshops, work based learning and supervised time in clinical skills rooms. Contact time will also include the use of virtual learning environments (VLEs), multiple learning methods, online and other Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) activities. You will undertake neonatal examinations in practice.
