How Can Courtroom Skills Training Help You?

The Courtroom Skills training course prepares you for giving evidence as a witness. It is an intensive, highly practical and experiential form of giving evidence training, designed especially for healthcare professionals, although it can be adapted to meet the needs of particular organisations or individuals. The course will help you if you need to give either evidence as a professional witness, expert witness, or both, in court or at a tribunal or hearing. You will learn how to prepare to give evidence, and to make the right impression from the start . You’ll understand the importance of being familiar with the evidence to be presented and how to explain and justify investigative decisions or expert opinions under cross-examination.

Our Expert

The Sancus course is presented by Michael Williams, a practicing barrister, who (as GMC counsel) has extensive experience of cross-examining medical experts in fitness to practise proceedings and (as Prosecuting Counsel in both UK and Australia) in proceedings before the criminal and civil courts. In recent years, Michael has also been called upon to assess the weight to be accorded to the evidence of expert witnesses, medical and otherwise. He holds, or has held, quasi-judicial appointments as a Legal Assessor to Panels and Committees of the General Medical Council, General Teaching Council and Teaching Agency and Health Professions Council (as it was). He is a member and Panel Chair of the Disciplinary Committees of the Academy of Experts and the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy and also sits on four police misconduct panels. Michael is an experienced trainer and acknowledged expert in medico-legal issues. He was formerly the Course Director of the BSc (Hons) Forensic Science and Criminal Investigation degree programme at the University of Central Lancashire, where he developed and presented a post-graduate module on expert witnesses.
