The Nature and Treatment of Cancer

This course is offered at Level 3 (Degree) and Masters level and is delivered at our Glenside Campus. To apply you must be working in a cancer-related field.

Course content includes:

  • Cancer Biology: Normal physiology of the cell cycle and immune system versus malignant transformation of cells. Inherited risks of cancer development.
  • Context of Cancer: Epidemiology. Health promotion and screening. The holistic impact of cancer, focusing on psychosocial aspects of care.
  • Treatments and Care: Principles and advances in chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery and bone marrow transplantation. Immediate and long term side effects.
  • Survivorship and Support: Survivorship issues for patients, families and caregivers. Current initiatives for support. Care of health care professionals working in cancer.

Delivery:

Expected study time is 48 hours and teaching will be in the form of seminars, lectures and online activities delivered over six study days. Sessions will be facilitated by UWE cancer specialist lecturers and outside speakers from clinical practice.

Please note: Priority will be given to applications received through our funded educational contracts. Places on this module will be limited for applications received outside of this funding. Please check with your employer as a funded contract place may still be available to support your learning.
