Living and Working with Obesity

College of Contemporary Health
Delivery Method: e-Learning

Obesity’s ubiquitous presence in newspaper headlines and opinion columns is not an unwarranted one however, evidence continues to mount around the health risks that obesity presents to those afflicted by it, from type 2 diabetes to 13 different types of Cancer.

The prevention, management and treatment of patients with obesity requires a specific awareness, training and skill-set. However, fewer than 0.1% of health professionals in the UK have had any specialist training in obesity.

The lack of training has had a major effect on front line nursing staff who face the problem in their day-to-day practice. According to recent research, although 93% of nurses acknowledge that overweight and obesity are diagnoses requiring intervention, 76% do not pursue the topic with overweight and obese patients.

Living and Working with Obesity was created to support nurses on pursuing sensitive topics during a professional encounter with patients with overweight or obesity. By taking this course you will:

  • Gain the confidence to successfully manage and treat patients with all aspects of overweight and obesity
  • Develop effective and compassionate communication skills for interaction with overweight and obese patients
  • Learn how diet, stress and environment are key contributors to overweight and obesity
  • Generate solutions to overweight and obesity
This course was invaluable to my practice – I would absolutely recommend this course to all of my nursing colleagues!
