Venepuncture is the commonest invasive procedure performed in health care settings. Blood Samples are collected for a variety of reasons including, laboratory analysis to diagnose a condition, monitor the ongoing treatment of a patient and to remove blood for the purpose of transfusion.It has also been recognised that blood collection practices, health care practitioner’s (HCP) skills and experience, techniques and knowledge vary across the healthcare spectrum. This lack of standardisation and knowledge directly affects the HCP and safety risks as well as outcomes related to the quality of blood specimens.

At the end of the session you will be able to practice venepuncture under supervision within your clinical area. Learners will need the support of a mentor or assessor when returning to practice under supervision.
Our Clinical Skills courses – all delivered by experienced health care practitioners– provide the underpinning theoretical knowledge (and evidence-base) supported by opportunities to practice and be assessed in a simulated environment.
