Train the Trainer course for Learning Disabilities

In general people with learning disabilities have poorer oral health than those without these conditions. Having sweetened nutritional supplements , problems performing self care and medications containing sugars are a common contributing factors. Carers play a vital role in supporting individuals to maintain their oral health.

AIM

At the end of the course the trainer will be able to provide carers with the knowledge and ability to plan and deliver best practice daily mouth with confidence. The training will raise awareness of the importance of daily mouth care and gives practical advice for people that are dependent or need assistance in oral care.

THE COURSE is comprehensive without being complex in detail to cover and reach the oral care needs of your care home/s. The aim is for your trainer to deliver oral care training in a interesting fun way with thought provoking questions, interactive case scenarios and a practical section, all which is optional depending on how your trainer prefers to deliver training.

Your allocated trainer will be given a booklet (at home study book) which he/she will be assessed on the training day. Your trainer will spend the day with one of our dental care professionals/trainers who will go through the training material. The student will be expected to deliver a short training session (micro teaching session) on the training day. She/he will be given all the necessary paperwork and an oral care presentation to start using as well as have a mentor available to discuss any oral healthcare questions after the training session.

The name and correspondence details of the nominated person are required 3 weeks prior to the training date.

TRAINING DAY

The nominated trainer will need to

  • Complete assessment paper
  • Mentor/dental care professional delivers the presentation
  • Micro teaching session
  • Assessment and certification awarded


LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • By the end of this course the trainer will be competent in mentoring other staff members to better equip caregivers to confidently deliver oral care.

  • Be able to raise awareness of the importance of daily mouth care and for practical advice for those people that are dependent or need assistance in oral care.

  • Provide carers with the knowledge and ability to plan and deliver daily mouth care.
