End of Life Care for People with Dementia Course

What's covered on the day?

This course is aimed at anybody involved in the End of Life care setting with people diagnosed with dementia to enhance existing skills and to discover new approaches that will further enrich this field of caring, making it a more positive experience. This will explore how dementia can affect end of life care, some facts about dementia and disease progression. The day covers legislation that may be used and implemented for caring for people at the end of life.

Assessment

The day is interactive throughout, allowing the delegates to get as much as they can for themselves from the day. There will be an opportunity to discuss everything at length, with peers and tutor ensuring learning. A certificate of attendance will be issued on completion.

• Define relationship-centred care
• Identify what is meant by quality of life in relation to this subject
• Discuss living and dying and the perceptions around this
• Explain the principles of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and its application to practice during the end of life
• Analyse the differences between advance decisions, advance statements and advance care plans
• State the potential ways to assess a person’s pain when they are approaching their end of life and have dementia
• Summarise the issues that could be faced by an individual, relative and staff during the care of a person with dementia at the end of their life
• Interpret the challenges and difference when looking at cultures and communication
