What's covered on the day?

This half-day refresher is aimed at experienced practitioners who have been catheterising patients for a while, and require a core subject update on the latest procedure and practice. The session will cover all theoretical aspects relating to Catheterisation and knowing when use is required for Male, Female and Supra Pubic Catheterisation within practice. They will have a good understanding of the procedure to follow and how to undertake catheterisation safely in line with best practice and evidence base. Competencies will be referred to throughout the course and a copy will be issued for the delegate to take back to their own clinical setting for completion, until deemed competent within their organisations guidelines and protocols.

Assessment

A Certificate of Attendance will be issued, valid for 3 years. There is no formal summative assessment for this course, although formative assessments of knowledge and understanding will be carried out by the tutor throughout the course.

Learning Objectives

  • To identify what Urinary Catheterisation is and the criteria for catheterisation
  • Review and correctly identify the Anatomy and Physiology involved in catheterisation of a Male, Female and Supra-pubic
  • Identify the equipment needed for urinary catheterisation to take place, and the general procedure for all catheterisations
  • Identify the importance of good infection control procedures to minimise the risk of urinary tract infections and other complications
  • Discuss and ensure understanding of routing catheter care for both service users and staff
