This interactive skills workshop will enable all participants to develop the theoretical and practical skills required to gain workplace competence in venepuncture (also known as 'phlebotomy').

Delivered by experienced and skilled trainers, the practical workshops will offer learners ample opportunities to undergo supervised instruction / practice using high quality training manikins as well as ask relevant questions. In the afternoon, learners will undertake a simulated competency assessment and short theory test.

Please note: its important to point out that learners who are new to this clinical skill will be required to gain competency under clinical supervision within their own workplace: competency frameworks will be provided.

All learners will receive a CPD certificate which can count towards revalidation with your professional body if appropriate.

Learning outcomes include:

  • Understanding the legal and professional issues.
  • Understanding venous anatomy and suitability of vessels for both venepuncture/ phlebotomy.

  • Overview of the venous anatomy of the human arm and leg and criteria for vein selection.
  • Equipment available - review of the common blood sampling / cannulation devices and safety devices available.
  • Practical techniques under expert supervision using the most up-to-date training manikins available.
  • Complications of venepuncture and cannulation.
  • Documentation and ongoing assessment of devices.
  • Theory test and simulated competency assessment.
  • Ample opportunity for discussion with our experienced trainers.

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for all healthcare professionals whose role involves taking venous blood samples (‘venepuncture’ or ‘phlebotomy’). Previous participants have included ward nurses, practice nurses, community nurses, health care assistants, phlebotomists etc.

  • Will I receive a certification on completion of this course? Yes
  • Will I gain a qualification at the end of this course? No
  • What materials will be provided? All delegates will receive a course workbook which includes relevant references and sources of further reading.
  • Can I practice venepuncture/ phlebotomy following this training? Most phlebotomists are trained on the job. Completing this course will give you theory and classroom experience to prepare you for taking bloods (phlebotomy). However, you would be required to complete a period of workplace competency before being proficient in this skill. See further information here and here.

Training Lead - Charlie Bloe (BSc RGN NDN ITU cert)

Charlie graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1984. He is also a Registered General Nurse and District Nurse. He gained his Intensive Care Certificate in Glasgow in 1988. In 1997, Charlie established CB Nursing Updates (now Charles Bloe Training Ltd) whilst working full-time in the NHS. Charlie has a wealth of clinical experience – both in the NHS and in training development and delivery. He has spent most of his clinical career in acute cardiology. He continues to work as a Clinical Manager in NHS Highland (coronary care) and adopts a hands-on approach within Charles Bloe Training Ltd, delivering numerous training courses throughout Great Britain and Northern Ireland every year.
