This course covers the initial assessment, examination and management of lower limb injuries presenting to the ED or Minor Injuries Unit, including in-depth X ray interpretation. Normal variants and frequently missed injuries are examined, along with commonly encountered conditions. Practical examples and case-based scenarios are used throughout.

Aims and Outcomes

To effectively assess lower limb injuries, determine the need for imaging and referral, and provide appropriate treatment and follow up.

To gain experience in the interpretation of lower limb trauma X rays

Focused history and examination

Injury types bony injuries, sprains, tendon ruptures, wounds, infections

Injuries by region including:

  • Knee - cruciate ligament rupture, Segond fracture
  • Ankle Ottawa guidelines, Weber classification
  • Foot Lisfranc fracture, calcaneal fractures, puncture wounds

Paediatric injuries toddlers fracture, Osgood Schlatters disease, Salter Harris fractures
