This course covers the initial assessment, examination and management of upper limb injuries presenting to the ED or Minor Injuries Unit, including in-depth X ray interpretation. Normal variants and frequently missed injuries are examined, along with commonly encountered conditions. Practical examples and case-based scenarios are used throughout.

Aims and Outcomes

To effectively assess upper limb injuries, determine the need for imaging and referral, and provide appropriate treatment and follow up.

To gain experience in the interpretation of upper limb trauma X rays

Course Content

History and examination of upper limb injuries

Injury types bony injuries, sprains, tendon ruptures, wounds, infections

Injuries by region including:

  • Shoulder dislocation, tendinitis, rotator cuff tear
  • Elbow soft tissue signs, supracondylar fracture
  • Wrist Colles fracture, Smiths fracture, lunate disloction
  • Hand nerves and tendons, finger amputations

Paediatric injuries greenstick and torus fractures, elbow ossification centres
Case based scenarios
