THESE DISTANCE LEARNING COURSES START ON A REGULAR BASIS AND WILL ENHANCE THE KNOWLEDGE OF

ANYONE WORKING IN HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE, IMPROVING THEIR PRACTICE AND ALSO COUNTING TOWARDS THEIR

CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (CPD).

You must be 18 or over to enrol. These courses require a good level of English and you will take an assessment during

the first class to confirm your place. These courses are delivered via distance learning and take up to 14 weeks to

complete. To succeed on a distance learning course, you must be motivated to meet deadlines and produce detailed

quality work without supervision.

Normally, the fees are £300, but a 100% fee reduction may apply to you if you are in receipt of benefits and actively seeking employment.

All of the courses are approximately 14 weeks long, and the contact sessions will take place at Shipley College.

To be accepted on to the course, you will have an interview which could be done over the phone, or you could call in to an Open Day to speak to a member of staff.


UNDERSTANDING THE SAFE HANDLING OF MEDICINES – 0/5590/RDL

This course aims to help you develop a general understanding of different types of medication and their use, knowledge of the procedures

for obtaining, storing, administering and disposing of medicines, as well as an understanding of legislation and the audit process related to

medication and issues of responsibility and accountability.


UNDERSTANDING COMMON HEALTH CONDITIONS – 0/5596/RDL

This qualification is designed for learners looking to start work in, or already working in health and social care, who would like an

understanding of common health conditions and their effects on individuals. This course aims to develop knowledge and understanding of

various common health conditions and monitoring the health of individuals affected by health conditions. The course will prepare learners

for further training and support a role in the workplace where the individual may work or interact with those experiencing different health

conditions.


UNDERSTANDING NUTRITION & HEALTH – 0/5998/RDL

Increase your knowledge and understanding of the principles of healthy eating and the role of food in maintaining health and confidence in

planning and achieving a healthy diet. You develop your understanding of how an individual’s dietary requirements change throughout their

life, understand food labelling and the ability to use information from food labels. You also increase your knowledge of eating disorders,

the role of a healthy diet for weight management and increase understanding of the principles of food safety in a home environment.


FALLS PREVENTION - 0/5595/RDL

Increase your awareness and understanding of falls and their prevention, which will allow progression in to, or within, employment in

healthcare or social care settings. Learners will gain knowledge and understanding of the impact and consequences of a fall, risks and

hazards which contribute to falls and how to reduce the risk of them happening. The course also covers the importance of recording and

reporting any incidence of falls to ensure that interventions can be put in place to reduce the risk and their re occurrence. This qualification is aimed at anyone working in a healthcare or social care environment, particularly those that support or have contact with older people who have an increased propensity to falls.


INFORMATION, ADVICE & GUIDANCE (IAG) – 0/5987/RDL

This qualification aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of the key principles of information, advice or guidance and applying

these within their own context, which is suitable for those working, or looking to work in, a range of roles where the provision of information, advice or guidance is a requirement.


UNDERSTANDING CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE’S MENTAL HEALTH – 0/5988/RDL

Develop and increase your knowledge and awareness of children and young people’s mental health, their common mental health problems, the impact of mental ill-health on them and the support available to maintain their mental wellbeing.


AWARENESS OF MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS - 0/5594/RDL

This course is designed for anyone looking to develop their understanding of mental health and the problems that can cause mental

ill-health. This could be used to support their role in the workplace or where they may work or interact with individuals with mental health

problems.


COUNSELLING SKILLS – 0/5989/RDL

This course introduces you to the use of counselling skills in everyday life and work, and some of the approaches that underpin the use of

these skills. It gives you the opportunity to investigate the knowledge and skills needed to use counselling skills and engage in a helping

interaction appropriately.


PRINCIPLES OF DEMENTIA CARE – 0/5591/RDL

This course aims to assist you to develop your knowledge and understanding of the principles of caring for those with dementia. It covers

areas such as person-centred care, the influence of positive communication methods, issues relating to the use of medication for those with dementia and the importance of providing appropriate activities. The qualification doesn’t infer competence in the work role, but can be used to support the underpinning knowledge and understanding needed for those working in, or towards, a dementia care role.


UNDERSTANDING BEHAVIOUR THAT CHALLENGES – 0/5592/RDL

This course is designed to increase your awareness and understanding of behaviour that challenges and its effects. By completing the

qualification, you will develop in depth knowledge of behaviour that challenges which could support progression on to other appropriate

qualifications and in to relevant employment in the Health & Social Care sector. This qualification would be valuable to learners already

working in education and health and social care settings.


UNDERSTANDING AUTISM – 0/5593/RDL

Develop an understanding of autism and how to support individuals with autism. It covers the person-centred approach and influence of

PREPARING TO WORK IN ADULT SOCIAL CARE NCFE LEVEL 2 CERTIFICATE

Develop the professional knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to work in this sector or to support an interest in working in adult

social care. Topics include: communication, the role of the social care worker, handling information, health and safety, person-centred

care, safeguarding and duty of care. In this intensive course, you will be required to have a good level of English. You need to evidence

a Level 1 English qualification or above. You will need to attend College three days per week - Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

After successfully completing this course, you could progress in to paid or voluntary work in adult social care.

If you wish to progress on to the Health & Social Care Level 2 Diploma, you will need to have recently completed a minimum of 140 hours

of work experience and then maintain a minimum of 14 hours a week during the course.

Do you support people who at times lack mental capacity or are interested in finding out more? You will gain the knowledge and

understanding required to provide support and care to individuals in accordance with the Mental Capacity Act 2005. You also cover the

importance of complying with the Mental Capacity Act 2005 Code of Practice when working with individuals who lack mental capacity.

SUPPORTING INDIVIDUALS ON THE AUTISTIC SPECTRUM LEVEL 3 CERTIFICATE (AIM)

Do you support people with autism? This qualification is ideal whether you are working in statutory, private or voluntary services as the

broad range covers a diverse range of job roles and occupational areas providing support to individuals with autism. You must provide

direct support, as observations of you in your workplace supporting individuals on the Autistic Spectrum will be needed for completion of

the course. Develop your understanding of the challenges faced by people with autism and learn how to address the individual’s specific
