Making Every Contact Count (MECC) Training Course (3 hours)

Course and aims

The session is a half-day Royal Society of Public Health (RSPH) accredited course that aims to build participants’ Making Every Contact Count (MECC) skills. MECC is about maximising the opportunities provided through brief, opportunistic conversations to help clients and/or patients stay well, take better care of their health and wellbeing, and make healthy lifestyle choices.

Who is it for?

The session is suited to front-line staff and volunteers in brief contact with the public in their day to day work, and who feel that they could make these short conversations count by having more effective short conversations to support peoples’ health and wellbeing.

What will be covered?

The session will be highly interactive, drawing on participants’ own experience, and covering:

  • What is MECC and why is it important?
  • The wider determinants of health that impact individuals’ lifestyle behaviours
  • The importance of a person-centred approach
  • The 4As model (Ask, Assess, Assist, Act)
  • Applying the 4As model to a range of conversational situations about health and wellbeing
  • Tips and guidance on how to have an effective MECC conversation (including use of the MECC Link resource)
  • Implementing MECC in participants’ own practice

Learning outcomes

  • Recognise the relevance of MECC to their own roles and organisations
  • Draw on a basic knowledge about, e.g.: stopping smoking; increasing physical activity; reducing alcohol consumption; maintaining a healthy weight and diet; and promoting mental health and wellbeing
  • Deliver very brief interventions on the above topics, including communicating key healthy lifestyle messages and signposting people to appropriate services and resources
  • Know how to access and use the online resource ‘MECC Link’ to support them deliver MECC.

This ½ day Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) training provides practitioners in support staff roles (paid and unpaid) with the confidence to use opportunities they have through day to day contact with those they are working with ( i.e. patients, clients, services users) to have short conversations that offer very brief healthy living advice, help encourage them to change behaviour and signpost to local services that can help them.

Delivered by an accredited Making Every Contact Count (MECC) trainer from Social Marketing Gateway, and designed in collaboration with the Making Every Contact Count (MECC) Community of Improvement & the Excellence Centre in West Yorkshire and Harrogate Centre, this interactive raining will provide participants with the knowledge and skills develop a person centred approach to MECC.
