Who should attend?

This 1 day course developed by "Mencap" and delivered by a Mencap trained trainer is aimed at Nurses, Care Workers /Healthcare Assistants, Learning Disability leads and other healthcare professionals & front line staff who are required to deliver/share learning that shapes best practice in the care and treatment of people with a learning disability.

  • Identification & Assessment of learning disabilities
  • Facts and General Statistics
  • Over-view of the “Death by indifference” report
  • Case study: Paul Ridd
  • Confidential Inquiry into Premature Deaths of people with a learning disability (CIPOLD)
  • Learning disability mortality review (LeDeR)
  • LeDeR current findings
  • Diagnostic overshadowing
  • Implicit attitudes
  • “Do not attempt to resuscitate?”- DNAR and the law
  • Stopping over-medicating people with learning disabilities (STOMP)
  • The Equality Act 2010 -“reasonable adjustments”
  • Common health issues for people with a learning disability
  • Hospital/ Healthcare Passports

The course is designed to compliment and meet some of the needs of the requirements of the 'Awareness of Mental Health, Dementia & Learning Disabilities' standard within the Care Certificate (Standard 9) . In particular:

  • Learning Disability Awareness
  • Understand the needs and experiences of people with Learning Disabilities
  • Understand the importance of promoting positive health and wellbeing for an individual who may have LD

An interactive workshop - Which will provide participants an opportunity to:

  • Build on their understanding of what it means to have a learning disability and their experience in this area of work
  • Consider the experience of others in relation to best practice when working with people who have a learning disability
  • Understand legal frameworks, policy and guidelines relating to learning disabilities

Attending this course will enable participants to:

- Build on your understanding of what it means to have a learning disability and your experience in this area of work.Gain a greater understanding of learning Disabilities .

- Through the experience of others to work in ways that promote positive attitudes, show compassion and understanding, and promote well-being, inclusivity and person- centred care.

- Achieve Standard 9 of the Care Certificate (Awareness of Mental Health, Dementia & Learning Disabilities)
