Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression (PMVA) 1 Day

This refresher course in Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression (PMVA) demonstrates techniques which will help you continue to defuse and manage potential conflict, safely, within a variety of settings.

This course has been developed in line with the GSA (General Services Association) standards and meets the requirements of the 2019 Restraint Reduction Network (RRN) Training Standards.

• Hierarchy of responses
• Legal + ethical issues
• Influences on PMVA
• Risks in restraint
• Defining self-defence
• Use of Reasonable Force
• Personal safety awareness + challenging behaviour
• Principles of observation + communication
• De-escalation
• Avoiding + detection of positional asphyxia
• Instruction + practice of breakaway + self defence techniques (where applicable) -
  1. Wrist grabs (parallel + diagonal)
  2. Clothing grabs (various)
  3. Slaps, punches + kicks
  4. Hair pulls (various including pony tail grabs)
  5. Strangle holds
• Instruction + practice of low risk physical intervention techniques: -
  1. Planned approach (restraining violent patient as part of a response team)
  2. Role of the head person
  3. Prone restraint
  4. Chair de-escalation
  5. Managing legs
  6. Supine restraint + IM medication
  7. Turning the patient
  8. Seclusion exits + seated de-escalation

Objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

• Understand how PMVA sits within the legal framework of the Mental Health Act + Mental Capacity Act
• Understand Reasonable Force
• Understand ethical considerations of physical intervention
• Identify possible causes of violence + aggression
• Know the stages of the assault cycle + what each stage means
• Be able to identify signs of escalation of aggression
• Understand the different types of de-escalation strategies
• Recognise the importance of early intervention
• Understand the importance of continually assessing + evaluating the levels of risk posed by difficult / challenging people
• Select + utilise appropriate physical + non physical strategies to manage aggressive individuals
• Demonstrate how to escape safely from a variety of grabs + holds
