This one hour session was developed through consultation with staff working in stroke services across West Yorkshire and Harrogate, and is suitable for Nurses, Healthcare Assistants and Care Workers, Therapists, GPs, Healthcare students, Paramedics, Emergency Care Practitioners and Junior Doctors whether they currently work in stroke services or want to improve their knowledge around the subject..

Delivered in May 2019 by Eman Abdus Sami who works as a Stroke Consultant and Clinical Lead at Airedale NHS Trust,it was the first of a number of planned stroke masterclasses in 2019/2020, brought to you by the West Yorkshire and Harrogate Health and Care Partnership Regional Stroke Clinical Network.

Aims and objectives of the masterclass

  • To understand the importance of History in making a clinical diagnosis
  • To explore common and variable presentations of Stroke
  • To gain knowledge of common stroke/Trans- Ischaemic Attack (TIA) mimics

Content of the session

The session was delivered using an interactive case presentation. Subjects included:

  • The common causes of Acute weakness
  • How to diagnose Stroke/TIA
  • Common Stroke mimics and their clinical presentations
