Introduction

Safeguarding and Protecting Children is Everyone’s Responsibility and has a duty of care to ensure they safeguard and protect children at risk of harm and neglect and promote their welfare. All those who come in contact with children and their families as part of their day to day work, and those who do not, have a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of children.

All staff have a duty to familiarise themselves with the risk factors signs and symptoms of child abuse and be aware of the action to be taken should such an incident present itself.

The aim of this course is to ensure that children and young people can ‘stay safe’ by minimising the risk and incidence of child abuse, thus enabling them to achieve. All children have the right to be safeguarded from harm and exploitation. One agency alone cannot protect children and neither can procedures alone, promoting children’s wellbeing and safeguarding them from significant harm depends on effective information sharing collaboration and understanding between agencies and professionals.

Learning Outcomes

  • be able to recognise potential indicators of child maltreatment – physical, emotional, sexual abuse, and neglect including radicalisation, child trafficking and female genital mutilation (FGM)
  • understand the impact a parent/carers physical and mental health can have on the well-being of a child or young person, including the impact of domestic violence
  • understand the importance of children’s rights in the safeguarding/child protection context know what action to take if there are concerns, including to whom concerns should be reported and from whom to seek advice
  • understand the risks associated with the internet and online social networking
  • be aware of relevant legislation (i.e. Children Acts 1989, 2004 and the Sexual Offences Act 2003).

  • your responsibilities and how safeguarding is relevant to your role.

Recognising the Signs of Abuse –

  • statistics
  • how child abuse is defined,
  • categories of child abuse - physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, vulnerable children,
  • recognising the signs and indicators of abuse.

Responding to a Disclosure –

  • how a concern may come to your attention,
  • disclosures from a child and how to respond,
  • how not to respond,
  • why children don’t disclose information,
  • why adults don’t take action and next steps.

Reporting your Concerns –

  • your responsibilities,
  • how to report an incident and who to report to,
  • what to do if a report isn’t taken seriously,
  • what to do if the concerns are about a professional,
  • when to report a concern and what to report,
  • talking to the child’s parents and what happens next.

Recording Information –

  • when to record your concerns
  • what to record and record keeping tips.

Target Audience

All staff including non-clinical managers and staff working in health care settings.

Accreditation

This course was designed with safeguarding specialist in health and social care sector and meets the outcomes for this framework.

For face to face training session’s assessment – questions and answers, including short written test.
