This half day course can be run on its own or as part of a 1 or 2 day autism and / or learning disability course.

The overall aim of the course is to introduce (and or refresh) the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to be safe when caring for a person with an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) (taking into account that brain injury can happen to anyone) and the effect this may have on day to day and wider functioning.

The course will take account of professional, legal and ethical guidelines, policies and procedures and best practice guidance.

We can adjust this face-to-face programme to suit the needs of the group and it can be complimented with a range of our online training courses.

Learning outcomes include:

By the end of the course the candidates should be able to:

  • Discuss the normal anatomy and physiology of the brain in a simple, clear, easy to understand way and explore the possible consequences when certain structures are injury.
  • Identify the mechanisms, classifications and causes of brain injury
  • Explore and discuss strategies and skills to enable effective working practices and relationships of those working with people with brain injuries.
  • Explain the common difficulties experienced by people after a brain injury and reflect on simple strategies they can implement to improve and manage these difficulties
  • Discuss the importance of care planning and risk assessment
  • Recognise (candidates) own personal and professional responsibilities in line with legal, professional, local organisational policies, procedures and guidelines.
