The Level 2 Specialist Award in Catheter Care ensures learners have an understanding of how to care for a person with an indwelling catheter.

At First Response Training we can provide face-to-face, classroom-based courses inhouse at your premises or venue of your choice, open courses at our public venues and a range of e-learning, distance learning and webinar courses, as well as blended learning solutions.

By the end of this course learners will:

  • Understand what a catheter is
  • Explain why we catheterise
  • Understand the male and female anatomy
  • Undertake daily catheter care
  • Understand how to empty and change catheter bags
  • Understand correct procedures for handling and positioning
  • Understand the importance of person centred care, privacy and dignity in relation to catheter care
  • Know how to complete the correct documentation

Course syllabus:

  • Legislation and guidance
  • What is a catheter/types of catheters/why one might be needed
  • Urine and anatomy of urinary system
  • Hydration
  • Catheter care incl. hand hygiene, cleaning, emptying, changing and positioning bag
  • Observations and recording

Certificate title: Level 2 Specialist Award in Catheter Care

Certificate validity: 3 years
