To provide healthcare support workers and adult social care workers with an overview of the subject, enabling an understanding of supporting a person with a learning disability.
Most develop before a baby is born, during birth or because of a serious illness in childhood. A learning disability is life-long and can have a significant impact on a person’s life. It is a broad term. Not all learning problems are learning disabilities. Learning difficulties can be mistaken for learning disabilities. All learning happens in stages.
People with learning disabilities have opinions, feelings, choices and control over their lives. People with learning disabilities, like everyone else may have emotional and social difficulties that affect everyday living. 3 People with learning disabilities have a high level of undiagnosed illness.
