This course contains an overview of the national and local agenda in relation to children with disabilities, basic knowledge of the range of protection needs of disabled children and information on how you can enable them to communicate about their experiences and provide support.
Lesson Plan
On completion of this module, learners will have covered the following learning objectives:
- Compare the different views on disability
- Identify disabilities linked to physical development, cognitive development, language development and social development
- Explain the medical and social models of disability
- Describe examples of barriers experienced by children and young people with disabilities and their families
- Discuss what equality, diversity and inclusion means for children and young people with disabilities, and their families
- Recognise potential barriers to effective communication and how to overcome them
- Explain the importance of working in partnership with parents/carers and professionals
- Describe the roles of other professionals involved in the case of children and young people with disabilities
- Identify factors which may contribute to the vulnerability of a child or young person with disabilities
- Describe setting procedures when there are safeguarding concerns of children and young people with disabilities
- Recognise the organisational, statutory and legal frameworks for protecting young people with disabilities
