Chickenpox: Signs, symptoms and treatment options

Chickenpox is a highly contagious viral illness that mainly affects children but can more rarely be caught by adults. Although usually mild in children, adults, pregnant women and immunocompromised patients are more prone to complications of chickenpox. This module covers methods of pain relief, treatment with varicella zoster immunoglobulin and acyclovir, what to do when pregnant women and young babies are exposed to chickenpox, and provides practical advice for coping with symptoms of itch.

After studying this module you should:

  • Understand the latest guidelines and research in relation to chickenpox in young children
  • Be able to spot the signs and symptoms of chickenpox
  • Be able to educate parents and carers about self-care options for chickenpox.

  • Read the clinical review
  • Complete the online assessment
  • Receive CPD certificate
