In the UK, Caesarean section (CS) deliveries increased from 19.7% of births in 2000 to 26.2% in 2015.1 Figures for 2019, show that around 30% of births were undertaken by CS in England.2 Some are planned (elective) while others are performed as an emergency following complications in pregnancy or labour.3 Whatever the reason, health professionals should offer women consistent evidence-based advice about CS wound healing, the risk of surgical site infection (SSI) and what can be done to avoid them.

Understand why some women are at greater risk of surgical site infections
