Dental hygiene in young children

MODULE SUMMARY

Paediatric dental decay is common, causes marked health and social problems, and is a leading cause of hospital admissions among children. Yet dental decay is largely preventable. This CPD module explores the evidence-based advice health visitors and other post-natal healthcare professionals can offer parents and carers to help prevent dental decay in their young children.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Understand the importance of establishing behaviours that promote good dental hygiene in early life
  • Appreciate the clinical, psychological and social impact of poor dental hygiene in children
  • Understand factors that predispose to dental caries
  • Be better able to offer practical advice to parents and carers about promoting good dental hygiene in children
