It is strongly recommended that users must complete classroom training first before undertaking this eLearning refresher course.

Physical restraint should only ever be used as an emergency intervention to respond to individuals posing an immediate danger to themselves or others.

This physical restraint awareness course is designed to give you an insight in how to maximise the safety of both healthcare worker and patient in a crisis situation, showing that physical restraint should only be used as a last resort after all other de-escalation techniques have failed. Healthcare workers are taught to focuses on identifying confrontational behaviour at its earliest stage and by the use of verbal and physical interventions reduce the chances of further escalation.

All Healthcare workers who work within an environment where there is a requirement for the use of restraint

Duration

The Health and Safety Group would recommend approx. 2 hours 30 minutes to complete the course

Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course the learner will:
  • Understand what constitutes challenging behaviour and the factors that can affect it
  • Understand why Physical Restraint is needed
  • Understand the legislation & guidance surrounding physical restraint including the public health model
  • Understand different gender responses and the importance of building relationships
  • Identify barriers faced within physical restraint and how to identify the risks of violence
  • Recognise signs of aggressive and non-aggressive body language
  • Know how to address and report workplace violence
  • Understand how prior knowledge of patient history, care plans and risk assessments can contribute to better intervention methods.
  • Understand the types of de-escalation principles that can be applied in different circumstances
  • Understand the principles of ethical considerations and self-control
  • Identify preferred techniques
  • Highlight the risks, injuries and treatments that would need to be considered if Physical restraint is used
