This interactive complex care session, delivered by a specialist nurse trainer, is split into two parts.

The morning provides you with the knowledge and overview of skills required to care for adults and paediatrics in the community who have a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube.

In the afternoon session, you will learn about caring for someone with epilepsy (includes rescue medications).

Course content includes:

PEG / Enteral Feeding Tube Care and Management

  • Anatomy & physiology of the digestive tract (brief overview).
  • Understand the indications for and complications of PEG / enteral feeding tubes.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding in the care, management and monitoring of the enteral feeding tubes.
  • Identify complications and risks associated with enteral feeding tubes.
  • Explore feeding and medicines management using a gastrostomy tube.
  • Infection control issues.
  • Recording requirements.
  • Regulations and policies.

Epilepsy

  • Understand what epilepsy is; what happens in the brain during a seizure.
  • Awareness of the different types of seizures.
  • Awareness of the possible causes of a seizure.
  • Recognise the signs and symptoms when someone is having a seizure.
  • Understand how to safely care for someone having a seizure.
  • Explore the specific risks and preventative management of seizures.
  • Discuss the different types of treatment available to control seizures.
  • Understand the emergency treatments and management of epilepsy.
  • Recognise (candidates) own personal and professional responsibilities in line with legal, professional, local organisational policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Recognise and understand when and why to call for emergency teams and or ambulance.

Target audience: This course is suitable for community nurses, experienced health care assistants / support workers and any other health or social care staff working with people with complex care needs in a community setting.

Time: 7.5 hours inclusive of breaks
