Overview

This 1 day virtual phlebotomy training course teaches you all the essential theory, skills, and regulatory requirements for taking blood. We will provide you with the background and rationale for blood taking practice and an exploration of the equipment and processes to form a solid theoretical foundation. You will then be able to go on to gain clinical competence and practice under supervision.

So who is the course suitable for?

The course is suitable for anyone wishing to add phlebotomy to their list of professional skills, including those who wish to apply for jobs in GP surgeries, hospitals, and other healthcare organisations.

So what’s included in this virtual one day phlebotomy course?

Firstly, this is an interactive, engaging, and comprehensive one day virtual phlebotomy training course. We have therefore included all of the core skills and topics required for the successful delegate to confidently start taking blood. There will be practical demonstrations throughout the course. To achieve the most from this courses and fully engage with the session you should access the equipment in your Phlebotomy Training Kit (Included) as listed below so that you can practice techniques during and after the course. 

Course content 

• Practitioner’s roles and responsibilities
• Summary of national standards, current resources, and legal aspects of phlebotomy
• Anatomy & physiology of veins and other structures in the common anatomical areas for accessing veins 
• Practical demonstrate of techniques 
• Safety, infection control, ANTT, and consent 
• Exploration of the different types of equipment found in practice, such as BD Vacutainer devices and S-Monovettes, butterflies, and straight needles
• Complications of phlebotomy using case studies 
• Competency and sign off of documents used in in practice

You will also be given access to the Health Academy phlebotomy competency workbook to fill in during and after the course

What’s NOT included in this phlebotomy course?

You will observe practical demonstrations throughout the day and you will have the option to explore/practice with the equipment. You will not, however,  be practically assessed as part of the course.

The course doesn’t cover cannulation. This requires an additional course.

Whilst the course covers blood taking techniques for children, it does not cover techniques such as scalp and heel prick samples which are specialist skills requiring additional training.

Arterial blood gas technique and analysis are not covered on this course

Venous blood gases can be obtained from the principles learned on this course.  However, using blood gas machines and blood gas analysis are not covered on the course.
