Administering Medication Training

Medication training is essential for those working in the health and social care sector. This could include those working in a care home setting such as care workers, carers, nurses, support workers and other care staff roles. Medication awareness training will cover the administration, prescribing, managing and handling of medicines safely such as morphine, sedatives, laxatives and antibiotics. Registered managers must ensure their workforce has completed training to meet CQC regulation 12.

Essential medication resources include guidelines produced by NICE for social care providers on managing medicines in care homes. The Care Certificate Standard 13 covers medication so this should be part of the staff induction process. The Department of Health has also issued evidence based guidance for care home providers on the Administration of medicine in care homes.
